Chicago mayoral candidate Lori Lightfoot released the following statement in response to the federal criminal complaint in the Ed Burke investigation. Lightfoot is available for comment regarding this news. Contact Nadia Perl at (510) 928-1717 or firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an interview.
“Based on the allegations in the federal criminal complaint, and based on Ed Burke’s fundraising for Toni Preckwinkle in late 2017 and early 2018, it seems the politician referenced in the federal criminal complaint may be Toni Preckwinkle,” said Lightfoot. “If Toni Preckwinkle is the politician referenced here, federal authorities must investigate each campaign contribution to determine if any other contributions were extorted or otherwise tainted.
“At a minimum, in light of allegations in the federal criminal complaint, Toni Preckwinkle must explain what Ed Burke has received in exchange for contributions. Ed Burke does not make contributions out of the goodness of his heart. Additionally, Toni Preckwinkle must disgorge all contributions made or raised by Ed Burke and make good on her promise to strip Ed Burke of his power to slate judges for the Cook County Democratic Party.
“Favors traded, deals cut, unethical conduct tipping into illegality—this is the toxic political brew that allowed Ed Burke to prosper. Chicagoans deserve answers as to how Ed Burke has been allowed to manipulate our political system for so long, and how any mayoral candidates have facilitated this corruption.”
