Chicago mayoral candidate Lori Lightfoot released the following statement today as new candidates enter the race for mayor.
“As a gaggle of new candidates enter this race, the needs of Chicagoans remain the same. We still live in a city where children must leave their neighborhoods to get a quality education, a city struggling under a broken property tax system that leans heavily on the middle class and communities of color, and a city that has failed to meaningfully reduce the fear and the reality of violence in our neighborhoods.
“This political moment offers Chicagoans a rare opportunity to choose new, forward-thinking leadership that can create a progressive path forward, and to reject the old style machine operations that have failed working families and our neighborhoods for decades.
“I got in this race before the decision was politically expedient, and I’ve spent my career working towards criminal justice reform and police accountability despite the obstacles. No matter who enters the race now, we’re moving full steam ahead to build a more inclusive and equitable Chicago.”
