Chicago mayoral candidate Lori Lightfoot released the following statement in support of Chicago-area hospital workers protesting today to demand a $15 an hour starting wage and the right to join a union.

“Growing up, my mother held a series of low-wage positions in nursing homes and mental institutions and as a home healthcare aide while my father balanced multiple jobs. Yet we still struggled financially—a story that is all too familiar in Chicago today. I’ve seen in my own life the devastation low wages bring to workers and their families, and I know we can do better. That’s why I’m proud to support Chicago-area hospital workers in their fight for living wages and the right to unionize, and why I’m backing the Fight for 15.”
